Introduction
Welcome to S-244, Field Observer Pre Course Work.
In this pre-course work, you will become familiar with navigation and field mapping. The pre-course work will take approximately 8 hours to complete, depending upon your experience level. You do not have to submit answers in advance of the course; however, be prepared to discuss the material and apply navigation and field mapping skills during the course.
Objectives
1. Students will obtain basic knowledge and skills related to navigating with a map, compass and Global Positioning Service receiver.
Instructions
1. Read Basic Land Navigation (NFES 2865) - see Reference Materials section below - this self-study publication is an introduction to navigation and field mapping. Complete the Checking Your Understanding in each chapter.
2. Read the owner’s manual for your GPS receiver and have a basic understanding of how to use the receiver. This is not a GPS course. The GPS receiver will only be used to complement basic map and compass skills.
