Introduction
Welcome to S-346, Situation Unit Leader Pre Course Work.
In this pre-course work, you will read material and look for resources on the internet. You do not have to submit answers in advance of the course however be prepared to discuss the material at the beginning of the course.
Objectives
1. Students will obtain basic knowledge and skills related to navigating with a map, compass and Global Positioning Service receiver.
2. Students will obtain basic knowledge about the Planning Section and Situation Unit. .
3. Students will obtain skills with locating internet web sites that contain Geographic Information Service (GIS) information that is relevant to the Situation Unit
Instructions
1. Read and complete the exercises in Basic Land Navigation (NFES 2865) - see Reference Materials section below. Be prepared to discuss the exercises during the course.
2. Read Overview of the Planning Section and Situation Unit - (see Reference Materials section below). Be prepared to discuss during the course.
3. Go online and search for information on Geographic Information System (GIS) resources that could be relevant to the Situation Unit. Consider starting at a site hosted by Oregon State University – GIS Resources for the Situation Unit (http://dusk.geo.orst.edu/gis/student_bibs/mtaber/). Be prepared to discuss during the course what you found and bring a list of websites reviewed.
