|How to Participate in Course Development/Revision
The NWCG Development Unit solicits annually for Subject Matter Experts (SME) and Field Reviewers on an as needed basis. Typically SMEs are needed to join the project teams when courses move from the analysis and design phases into the development phase; the specific skills needed are identified during the analysis and design phases. Email solicitations (including nomination form) will be sent out through relevant NWCG Committees, Geographic Area Training Specialists, and special interest groups when SMEs are needed for courses. For information on current course revisions (and phases) refer to monthly Course Development/Revision Status.
Subject Matter Expert:
A Subject Matter Expert is a person with a thorough technical knowledge and recent field experience in performing and/or supervising the position or area of expertise. A person recognized among his/her associates as being very competent at performing the task(s).
SMEs will participate in approximately three one week workshops (held in Boise) depending on the extent of revision required. The workshops will typically take place within a one year time period. The initial workshop will determine the extent of the revision.
With the exception of state personnel, travel and per diem are provided by the sending agency. In all cases, salary is provided by the sending unit unless arrangements are made with the agency.
Every effort is made to configure the project teams to represent a wide geographic area and agency mix while also attaining the best technical expertise available.
A Field Reviewer is a person who has a thorough technical knowledge of a position or area of expertise, developed through extensive field experience. They should be currently active in the position or subject area and be a proficient written communicator.
Field Reviewers are responsible for the validation of course content as it relates to their area of expertise.
The time required to accomplish this task depends upon the complexity and length of the course. They should expect to spend between 8 and 16 hours on the process.
There is no travel required for Field Reviewers; all the work can be performed at the home unit. Those nominees not selected as SMEs will automatically be entered into the field review database and be engaged at the time the course is ready to be reviewed.
