Topic: Policy Statements in Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy

Introduction

This section introduces the 17 policy statements contained in the 2001 Federal Wildland Fire Policy and it identifies why specific policy statements are relevant to the SOPL position. Like the guiding principles, these policy statements serve as the foundation for all wildland fire management activities.

The SOPL needs to be familiar with all 17 policy statements because SOPL products and recommendations need to be consistent with the policy statements. However, several of the policy statements are more directly relevant to the SOPL's role and responsibilities.

The policy statements have generally remained the same since the 1995 Federal Wildland Fire Policy. However, in 2001 (Federal Wildland Fire Policy), additional policy statements were added to address ecosystem sustainability, rehabilitation and restoration, science, communication, and education and evaluation.
